Services Whether you are considering buying or selling, are a novice auction-goer or seasoned collector, Ivey-Selkirk wants to ensure that you have the best experience possible. We are a family-owned and operated company, and relationships are at the heart of our business. Ivey-Selkirk offers complete auction services for the dispersal of personal property and fine art. Our dedicated specialists will work to appropriately evaluate and effectively market your consignments. We strive to take the intimidation out of buying at auction, and our personable staff will assist you every step of the way. Ivey-Selkirk knows auctions, so leave the thinking to us!
Ivey-Selkirk offers monthly, quarterly and specialty auctions throughout the year at our location in Saint Louis. Our monthly Jackson Rooms Auction venue and our quarterly Forsyth Gallery Auction venue include a variety of consignments featuring furniture and decorative art, silver, glass, porcelain and pottery, fine art, automobiles, carpets and textiles, lighting and architectural elements. Semi-annually we offer specialty venues of Jewelry, Twentieth Century Design, and Collectibles. View Upcoming Auctions
Catalogues We publish illustrated catalogues for each of our quarterly and specialty auctions and include brief descriptions of each lot, as well as low and high pre-auction estimates. This information is provided as a guide to assist you with your own evaluations. Prior to each auction, there are scheduled viewing times at our gallery and all offered lots are on display. During this time, catalogues are available for purchase and we also offer pre-auction registration. Condition reports are available upon request, but attending a preview is recommended to inspect and evaluate each lot you are interested in and to avoid last minute questions on the day of the auction. Please remember that each lot is sold "as is" and it is up to you, the bidder, to form your own opinion.
Bidding Bidding in person at auction is the most exciting way to buy fine property. If you are able to attend our auction sessions, you may register for a paddle number during the preview or on the day of the sale. The auctioneer will open the bidding for each lot and progress the bidding through dollar increments until the bidding interest stops. To participate in the bidding, it is important to raise your paddle in clear view of the auctioneer. Fair warning will be given before the auctioneer announces the final hammer price and successful paddle number at the fall of the gavel. A Buyer's Premium of 18% is added to the hammer price on the first $100,000.00 and a premium of 10% on the amount thereafter, as well as sales tax, if applicable.
Interested bidders unable to attend the auction may submit absentee bids in person during our preview, through our online catalogue, or via facsimile. This service allows a bidder to participate in the auction by leaving a firm bid amount on any lot. Our staff will execute this bid on the client's behalf, bidding up to the authorized amount. Following the auction, Ivey-Selkirk will contact all successful absentee bidders via telephone or email correspondence. If a bidder would prefer to participate via telephone bidding during the auction, please contact our Bid Department prior to the auction to arrange to have a member of our staff call a few moments before the desired lot is offered. We require that all new bidders provide written credit information to our Bid Department in order to secure any absentee or telephone bid requests. Ivey-Selkirk will accept absentee and telephone bid requests until 5:00 pm CST the last day of preview.
Payment & Removal of Purchases After an auction, we reserve the following two business days for payment and removal of all purchases. Property may not be picked up prior to payment, and our accounting office is open from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm CST. We accept cash, money orders, bank checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and personal checks with a valid driver's license. Please contact our Accounting Office to arrange for wire transfer payment. We will gladly fax or email invoices to our out of town clients upon request.
Once payment has been received, our staff is available to assist you with collecting your purchases. Should you require shipping assistance, following payment please contact our Shipping Manager to make arrangements. We can recommend several professional packing and shipping companies that we feel provide excellent service.
Please remember that a storage fee of $5/day will begin to accrue on all property that is not removed within 5 business days following an auction. If you need to make special arrangements for a delayed removal, please contact our Property Manager.
By selling at auction you have the potential to achieve the highest results possible for your personal property and fine art. The staff at Ivey-Selkirk will work to ensure that your experience with us is a positive one and that your goals become our goals. Yes, we have been auctioning fine art & antiques for 175 years, but what we sell is service! Our specialists are available to provide free, verbal auction value appraisals during our regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm CST. No appointment is necessary, but please give us a call if you would like to bring a large collection of items, so that we can ensure that the appropriate specialists are available to meet with you. We provide appraisals based on previous auction results, and our estimates should not be used for insurance purposes. If you would like to receive a formal written appraisal for estate tax or family division purposes, we are happy to discuss our fees and scheduling with you.
Appraisals When you meet with a specialist at Ivey-Selkirk, we will take the time to inspect and evaluate your property and conduct further research if necessary. Our estimates are based upon previous auction results and typically are conservative, but appropriate. We have found that an aggressive pre-sale estimate can intimidate potential buyers, so our hope is to start conservatively and finish aggressively. Once we establish a value, if significant, we will discuss the possibility of placing a reserve amount (minimum value) on each item. Your property will remain in our gallery until the next appropriate auction venue and is insured while on our premises. Please keep in mind that many of our consignment deadlines occur six weeks prior to the actual auction date, and often advertising deadlines will require property to be in our gallery earlier than that. If you are thinking about consigning to auction, it is never too late; we have sales on a monthly and quarterly basis. View Upcoming Auctions
Advertising & Marketing Together with our specialists, our advertising department works to market your property and find qualified buyers. We regularly advertise in a number of local, national and international periodicals such as The Saint Louis Post Dispatch, Art & Auction, American Art Review, Modernism Magazine, The Magazine Antiques, The Maine Antiques Digest, and The Antique Trade Gazette. In addition to our print ads we provide local radio and television commercials prior to each auction highlighting the property to be offered. With the advantages of the internet, clients contact us from all over the world after viewing our website or receiving our mailings. Ivey-Selkirk is not just a Saint Louis or Regional auction house. We have international exposure with mid-western sensibilities.
Our illustrated catalogues take weeks to prepare and are invaluable to collectors as reference guides for the fine art & antiques that we offer. We publish catalogues for our quarterly and specialty auctions and these are available for purchase two weeks prior to a sale date. You can also view an online version of our catalogue on our website and see multiple images of each lot we are offering. If you would like to order an individual catalogue or annual subscription, please contact our Catalogue Department for more information.
Commission, Additional Fees & Reserves Our commission schedule includes insurance coverage as well as storage and handling costs while property remains on our premises. In many cases, we include illustrations in our published catalogues and may suggest that an item also be included in our advertisements. Significant pieces certainly do benefit from the additional exposure, and there is an additional expense of $75.00 for photography. If an item's pre-sale auction value warrants establishing a reserve price, we will discuss this option with you at the time of consignment. If during an auction, an item does not reach its reserve amount and reverts to the consignor, the account is charged 5% of the reserve price if the item is not consigned to a future auction at a lower reserve. The consignor will be notified with a formal "Unsold" letter one week after the auction date with a request to contact our office and discuss these options.
Thirty-five business days following each sale, our accounting office will issue payment of net proceeds per our standard terms and conditions. Should you have any questions regarding payment of sale proceeds, please contact our Office Manager.
Results Our auction results are posted on our website after the close of each sale. We also supply these results (lot number and hammer price) to several national and international auction record databases for reference. If you have questions regarding current auction results or archived results, please contact our office, 314.726.5515 - iveyselkirk@iveyselkirk.com View Results
